He is unparalleled in his action skills, but his dramatic skills do equal a world class actor that not many give credit to. I personally was glad to see him act, like really act this time.
The foreigner, you see is a movie that makes good use of all his abilities and the Pierce Brosnan’s as well. However, there is a small disconnect. Because Brosnan plays a politician and his character talks a lot.
Jackie Chan’s character on the other hand kicks ass, and spends most of his screen time fighting. The disconnect comes when they go back and forth between the scenes. Because wasn’t this supposed to be an action thriller ? Or was it a politically motivated thriller with Jackie Chan in it?.
I personally couldn’t see the answer which is what creates the disconnect for me. They could have cut back on the politically motivated dialogues or off the scenes of Brosnan. Although he is almost perfect and gives a good show. This is one of the best Jackie Chan movies where he acts on the same level with Hollywood actors.

However, this one has its Hollywood element and the humor of a Blackman. These two things combined make for a great movie. But when you throw Jackie into the mix, it makes for a spectacular one. One that entertains from the start to finish throughout the three movie series.

The premise of the movie isn’t complex one. Jackie Chan reluctantly and unexpectedly gets involved in a mob chasing the journalist whom he decides to help just because she is a lady. And I am sure there were no sexist intentions back when it was created.
The story and the plot is weak which lowers the quality of the movie, but the action scenes and the fights are as good as the best Jackie Chan movies.
In fact, there are some of the stunts that were perfected in later movies which gathered the love and the admiration of the audience.
However the foundation for those were built in less successful movies like this. So, from that point of view this is still a top 10 Jackie Chan movie for its contribution to the other top Jackie Chan movies.

Project A is a mayhem of fights and action that gives the viewers action like no other movie. Of course the story and the plot is a bit wonky. Honestly, I still can’t really understand what is happening and why.
Mostly because it is the Chinese language. But even with subtitles it is confusing, and complex to say the least.
The fight scenes in the bar or the hotel tell how dedicated he was to his craft. It clearly shows how good of a fighter he is too. Plus, the stunt team, and their perfect execution of each kick. It is incredible how realistic and rhythmic the fights are.
I personally started to respect him even more when I found out that he broke his spine and neck bones when he jumped off that clock tower, but kept acting till the scene was over.
Of course, there are actors like Tom Cruise who do their own stunts, but they don’t jump off the towers, and keep acting even if they are in grave pain and are about to pass out. This man deserves every bit of fame and fortune he amassed.
That aspect of his dedication and love for his work can easily be seen in this movie which makes it one of the best Jackie Chan movies.

You shouldn’t expect the stereotypical Jackie Chan movie, where the comedy comes on the same level with action and other aspects. Because this one of the movies where he acted the serious lawyer and the comedy is pushed back a bit.
Nonetheless the action and the fights are top notch. In fact, they are so good that when Jackie Chan popular movies come together, this would win in a choreography battle.
Due to its failed release this movie is greatly underappreciated. Even though it has its flaws which are actually quite few in number compared to his other more successful movies.
In most of the best Jackie Chan movies it is common to see a worthy foe. Dragons Forever though sees the most worthy, per say. The last fight he has is so perfect, without any single mistake which makes it all worth the takes and the time they spent on those fights.
I heard from his interviews that he used to take upto 100 or more takes until he got it just perfect. If it’s not a characteristic of a dedicated martial arts person, who loves his work to death, then I don’t know what is.
