Midway Movie Review That Bombs Midway To Making It In Hollywood — OnReplayTV
Midway Movie Review follows the rest of the movie reviews we have from OnReplayTV. And stays true to the DNA of brutal honesty, and subjectivity of the reviews.
Roland Emmerich, who is popular for his disaster films, makes another one. With a script from Wes Tooke, and a cast of people like Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Woody Harrelson.
It’s about a bunch of people who supposedly turned the fate of the Second World War. When the Japanese planned to attack Midway.
The movie sets out to achieve lofty goals, yet crashes and burns and fails midway. An incredible ensemble of talents that the movie falls short of utilizing. Midway feels like a waste both in regards to talents and the marketing.
As I only heard about the movie from the reviews and other people talking about it on socials. However, I should have heard about it before it was released. Because that is what marketing does except in the case of the Midway. Let us proceed with the Midway movie review.
Midway Movie review
Opening attack of Pearl Harbor can be addressed with this guy and these guys, no protagonist or antagonist. They are just famous extras from the movies. The character we so far know and care about is someone who is not experiencing the attacks and the horrors of what is happening. Doing the Midway movie review is easy for it has not a lot to review.
The idea of his friendship with a commander and his betrayal is nothing if he is not experiencing it. Because technically he is not betraying him.
Apart from that, the acting is also bad. Not because of the actor. But because there is nothing to act with. The inhuman stuff is happening on the other side. The main character is learning about it on a different side OVER THE FREAKING PHONE.
To give you an idea. Compare this to a much smaller attack on Dunkirk that is told through the perspective of the heroes. We also got to know about them just enough to care about them.
Another one of the flopped moments is when a random guy takes off in rainy weather. When two other random soldiers bet against him.
As if their randomness wasn’t bad enough, once he takes off, the film cuts to an absolutely different scene. They should at least show the reactions of either one of the random guys.
This would at least give us some emotionality and meaning to the scene. However, if they were the characters we were introduced earlier or know about, it would even add depth. But they do all the things that you are not supposed to do. As if they were intentionally trying to fail.
Thematic feeling, and a general thread that connects them all is totally missing from the movie. The film is full of different, well, undeveloped characters. In this Midway Movie review I did not expect to talk a lot. Especially about the fundamental flaws of the movie like these.
They have too many storylines with too many characters whom they demonstrate as the heroes. Meanwhile show the Japanese as the rats of the movie. You don’t get far by ill-speaking the protagonist.
Also, you don’t make one movie with several heroes. You can if you at least surround them in and around one thematic theme. Like in the case of the Dunkirk!
You could easily understand it was the desperation attempt to pull off one impossible feat limited by time that drove them all forward. Although there were many different characters, different perspectives, they were all involved in accomplishing that feat. You need to tie it all together somehow to make it work.
Midway Movie Review
No plot, no purpose, it has to have the meaning behind why some tasks are carried out. For example the bombing of Japanese air base, it is a sequence they could cut out, and nothing would change. The film is full of no purpose scenes.
The worst part is to include some scenes because they are made to. Like the bombing of Tokyo and crash landing in China. If you actually know geography. That couldn’t have been far from the truth. The Tokyo is on the east side of Japan. Crash-landing into China would mean flying the whole country to the west and flying through Japanese sea and only then somehow landing in China. However, if an airline flew over a country and a sea, why crash there?
Well, I know the answer, the funding for the movie came from China. Thus, the movie had to somehow include China and propagate Chinese propaganda of how bad Japanese treated them during the war. Is this a movie or a political agenda?.
Even narratively it makes no sense. The importance of midway throughout the whole movie is to protect the west coast of the US. Yet there is not a single character we know lives or visits the place or even has relatives.
They keep talking and talking and bringing exposition after exposition to get nowhere. Exposition in and of itself is bad, but ones that lead to nothingness is even worse.
To Wrap up Midway Movie Review
Midway movie review agrees with Mark Kermode who said that this was a movie worse than Michal Bay’s Pearl Harbor.
When you want to do a historical movie, it is hard to please everyone. Because if you get the facts wrong. The history buffs will hate you. If you fail at plot and concept the movie lovers will hate you.
So, as a filmmaker you need to understand and walk a fine line between these limitations. However, the movie is still a movie at the end of the day. Thus, you need to entertain before you educate.
